This page gives you the key ideas to recognise before you start a question. The full course then takes you through the method, exam-style practice and fully worked solutions.
Check the model
SUVAT equations require constant acceleration. Do not use them blindly when acceleration varies.
List the variables
Write s, u, v, a and t and fill in the known information before choosing an equation.
Choose a direction
Set a positive direction and keep signs consistent, especially in vertical motion.
Select efficiently
Choose an equation containing the required quantity and known variables while excluding the variable you do not know.
Worked example: choose the equation
Known: u = 5 m s⁻¹, a = 3 m s⁻², t = 4 s. Find v.
Use v = u + at
v = 5 + 3(4)
v = 17 m s⁻¹
Use v = u + at
v = 5 + 3(4)
v = 17 m s⁻¹
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using SUVAT when acceleration is not constant.
- Treating speed and velocity as interchangeable when direction matters.
- Changing the positive direction halfway through a calculation.
